Executive Summary
The Executive Board met on Wednesday, May 18 in a blended in-person and virtual attendee meeting to primarily discuss the budget for next year. Additional topics discussed included professional learning opportunities, next year’s meeting dates and locations, meeting format, the school library survey, and new faces in the Executive Board.
Better Together, co-sponsored by MSLA and Mass CUE, will be held at Lesley University on August 25 from 4-7 pm. Participants will get a chance to hear Sue Cusack and Valerie Sinas speak and see Lesley’s innovative makerspace firsthand. Join your colleagues for an inspiring night, and register now.
EDCO is sponsoring an ELL class in Palmer (Western Mass). Karen Sekiguchi will be instructing this 15-hour class that satisfies the ELL requirement for librarians as part of the RETELL intitiative. Here is the link to register.
The Executive Board has changed the format of meetings to a blend of virtual and face-to-face retreat style encounters. These changes are meant to lower barriers to participation for all board members and improve the productivity of the meetings. All meetings are open to members, and the schedule is available on the MSLA calendar linked on the website.
Next year’s budget was discussed in detail, and will be finalized at the June meeting.
According to DESE, 764 librarians responded to the school library survey this spring, which was higher than the target of 500. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to participate in this important data collection effort.
This spring we welcome several new board members and welcome others into new roles. Rachel Bouhanda and Liz Soeiro will be co-chairs for Legislative Committee. Jen Thomas will be a Co-AD in Southeast. Amy Bloom will step for Metrowest Co-AD. Jen Reed will be Children’s Literacy Liaison, which involves outreach to Mass. Center for the Book, Mass Reading Assoc., summer reading, and other literacy concerns.
