MASSACHUSETTS - Nearly 3,000 teens in the Commonwealth have spoken and the winning book for the first Massachusetts Teen Choice Book Award is the graphic novel Heartstoppers, Vol. 1 by Alice Oseman (Hachette Children’s Publishing, 2019). The runner-up is Fallout: Spies, Superbombs and the Ultimate Cold War Showdown by Steve Sheinkin (Roaring Brook Press 2021). This is the only award in the Bay State that invites students in grades 7-12 to vote for their top new books.
These books were awarded top honors from a list of nominees curated by a committee of public librarians, school librarians and educators. Teens were invited to read the titles during spring and summer and vote for their favorite books from September 1-23, 2022.
Heartstoppers tells the story of Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson as they meet and fall in love at a boys’ school in England. Described as “an LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between,” Heartstoppers is also currently a series on Netflix and it was recently announced that there would be a second season.
Fallout: Spies, Superbombs and the Ultimate Cold War Showdown is the latest narrative non-fiction book from author Sheinkin, whose previous books Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World's Most Dangerous Weapon and The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights, were both National Book Award finalists.
“We are thrilled to announce our first Teen Choice Book Award winners and are so pleased that teens across our state responded so enthusiastically, creating social media content and submitting 2,640 votes online and in local libraries and schools. It is our hope that this will encourage more teens in our state to read some of the best new fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels published for their age group,” said Suzanne Larson, committee chair and high school library media specialist at Seekonk High School in Seekonk, Massachusetts.

Press Release March 27, 2022
MASSACHUSETTS - The newly-formed Massachusetts Teen Choice Book Award Committee announced its inaugural list of 21 nominee young adult (YA) books today at the statewide virtual Massachusetts School Library Association (MSLA) Conference. This is the only award in the Bay State that invites students in grades 7-12 to vote for their top new books.
The list of nominees has been curated by a committee of public librarians, school library media specialists and educators. Teens are invited to read the titles during spring and summer and vote for their favorite books from September 1-23, 2022. The top teen choices will be announced in October 2022 at the Massachusetts Library System’s Teen Summit.
“We were amazed to discover that the Bay State did not have an award that specifically offered teens the chance to vote for the titles they thought were the best new YA books. We modeled our award on the highly successful Massachusetts Children's Book Award and the neighboring Rhode Island Teen Book Award. It is our hope that this will encourage the teens of our state to seek out and read some of the best new fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels published for their age group,” said Suzanne Larson, committee chair and high school library media specialist at Seekonk High School in Seekonk, MA.
