Kathy Lowe

I joined MSLA’s executive board as secretary in 1991, a post I held until about 1997 when I volunteered to set up the organization’s first listserv. I moderated the list until 2003 when I became President-Elect. I was MSLA President from 2004-2006 and have been Executive Director since 2007.

I retired from my position as founding director of the Boston Arts Academy/Fenway High School Library and Boston Symphony Orchestra Education Resource Center in 2006. We were honored in June 2004 to be named the National School Library Media Program of the Year by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Winning the NSLMPY Award gave me opportunities to become involved on the regional and national level. I represented Massachusetts on the board of the New England School Library Association (NESLA) and attended AASL Affiliate Assembly meetings at the ALA mid-winter and annual conferences. In 2005, I was a member of an ALA Task Force on School Libraries that assessed the state of school libraries and recommended strategies ALA could use to prevent further erosion of school library programs. I served on the National School Library Media Program of the Year Award Committee in 2007. In 2008-09 I chaired AASL’s Learning Standards Indicators and Assessments Task Force. We produced Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action, published by AASL in 2009 and now widely used in our profession. Currently, I serve as Lead Moderator for the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner Lesson Plan Database (aasl.jesandco.org).

My husband Rick and I live in Lunenburg, where I have lived all my life. We have one son, James, a graduate of Hampshire College who lives with his family in Greenfield and is a reporter for the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton. We have two grandchildren, Astra and Elijah.

I have a Bachelor of Music Education from Lowell State College and a Master of Education with a concentration in Instructional Media from Fitchburg State College. I received my MLIS from Simmons College and also have a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Professional Development from Fitchburg State College.

I enjoy the opportunity to continue to contribute to our profession as MSLA’s Executive Director.
